The Winter Park Scenic Boat Tour Entertaining Informative and a Visual Delight

Expert Article By: Susanne Pacher

The Winter Park Scenic Boat Tour, founded in 1938 and located just 15 minutes north of downtown Orlando, is one of these lovely side trips that combine beautiful scenery, a bit of local history, some close-up exposure to local wildlife and vegetation with a relaxing outing in a slow-moving 18-passenger pontoon boat, all complete with expert (and sometimes humorous) narration provided by the boat's captain.

The tour takes you through 3 lakes: Lake Osceola, Lage Virginia and Lake Maitland. On this gorgeous day, with brilliantly blue skies, the boat whisked us past hundreds of beautiful water-front estates, many of which were originally built in the 1920s and originally sold for $20,000, while fetching between $500,000 and several million in today's booming Central Florida real estate market. Even boathouses are worth between $30,000 and $40,000.

In Lake Virginia we came up close to the grounds of Rollins College, one of the top rated private liberal arts colleges in the South Eastern United States, founded in 1885 by New England Congregationalists. Rollins College is the oldest recognized college in the state of Florida with a small student body of 1,700 students, housed on a beautiful 70 acre Mediterraean Revival Campus. Our expert captain / tour guide mentioned that tuition at the college is $38,000 and the ratio of students to professors is 12:1.

Condos are located right next to the college, selling today for between $450,000 to $1 million. As we approached the narrow Venetian Canal that would take us from Lake Virginia to Lake Maitland, our captain made us aware of all the interesting vegetation growing alongside the canal: Egyptian papyrus, Spanish moss (an airplant and not a parasite), the Princess flower, colourful bougainvilleas and resurrection fern. We saw a variety of birds, including an Osprey eagle, a snake bird, a great blue heron and a white egret, which used to be the good luck bird of the Seminole Indians.

On Lake Maitland we learned that there was an alligator cave from which 150 alligators were removed into the Florida Everglades to prevent a rather dangerous collision between local wildlife and civilization.

Along the Venetian Canal we also saw variegated ginger and banana trees, as we slowly passed under the arched Palmer Avenue Bridge. Philodendrons, palmgrass, bamboo, a plant called firespikes and an interesting arrangement of "air potatoes", round tubers hanging down from a tree branch, adorned our journey through the canal.

At 450 acres and 30 feet deep, Lake Maitland is the largest of the 3 lakes covered by the boat tour. A dam controls the water level and interestingly, the lakes all drain northwards into the St. John's River which flows into the Atlantic near Jacksonville. The Kraft Azalea Gardens, located on Lake Maitland on Alabama Drive off Palmer Avenue, feature thousands of azaleas, tropical shrubs and trees. Azaleas are in full bloom January through March.

Our expert captain also pointed out various mansions that have been used as backdrops in various movies and commercials. Lake Maitland also features several small islands with rather naked looking trees that house colonies of cormorants, fishing birds that consume up to a pound of fish a day.

We slowly made our way back from Lake Maitland to Lake Osceola where our relaxing and scenic boat tour came to an end. On this gorgeous day it was a fabulous outing that provided an appropriate historical context for a further exploration of the beautiful city of Winter Park.

The Scenic Boat Tour, a Winter Park institution for almost 70 years now, is located at the end of Morse Avenue on the shores of Lake Osceola. It is a very affordable outing at $8 for adults and $4 for children (children under 2 ride free). Boat tours run every day from 10 am to 4 pm (except Christmas). For further information contact the Winter Park Scenic Boat Tour.

Open Question: My entire family disowned me and I don't know what to do?

When my folks divorced, I was 15 and chose to live with my dad because he seemed like the lesser of two evils. My mom’s very selfish and always treated me like a rival instead of a daughter. My dad’s a manipulator and I had to play the parent with him. All my life, I became his enabler by lending him money which he never paid back. I put myself through college, moved out and never asked him for a penny. Instead of being a dad to me, he used me as a cash cow. He has a decent job but he’d rather have me buy him things. If I need financial help, I'm on my own. I’m doing pretty well financially but I spend and invest my money wisely because I’m 27 and I want to ensure a good future for myself. My family sees it as a chance to take all my money. The worst thing is that I don’t show off. They assume I’m rich because I bought myself a nice condo. My dad always emotionally blackmailed me and when I said no more, he disowned me. I tried to help him when I could but he has a job and I'm planning for my own life. I was close to my siblings but my dad turned them against me. They refuse to talk to me. I’m sad that despite everything I did, I'm being treated like a criminal. I tried to reach out to them but in vain. Last week, my mom called me and I informed her I no longer wanted to be part of the family because everyone was so evil. She called me selfish and told me God will punish me. My best friend’s mom’s always been a better mom to me than any of my real relatives. I’m very sad but I want to move on and not feel guilty. This situation's giving me anxiety and I have trouble sleeping at night. I started therapy a month ago and my shrink told me it'll take time but I did everything I could. What can I do to move on ? I’m not a bad person. I just want them to let me live my life in peace.

Resolved Question: Is the Philippines safe?

I really want to move to the Philippines for a few month to run my internet business. I currently live in Canada and I'm 19 years old. My mom, who was born in the Philippines refuses to let me move there because she insists it is not safe for someone like me... I don't know any Tagalog and I look Caucasian (I'm only half Filipino). She says I will just get kidnapped and held for ransom which I think sounds pretty ridiculous... I pretty much want to move to the Philippines to live a much bigger lifestyle than I currently do because I can literally rent an ocean-front mansion and live an amazing lifestyle for the same price as a full suburban condo in Canada. Would it be safe to pursue this kind of lifestyle in the Philippines?

Open Question: Problem with HOA-serious answers only please.?

Due to bad economy, we sold our home and bought a 2 bedroom condo. The condo has a homeowners association (HOA). When the realtor doing the sale was asked if pets were allowed, she said yes and gave us the HOA rulebook that lists everything allowed and everything prohibited. On page 22, it clearly states "pets" (plural) are allowed and the combined weight of pets (again, plural) cannot exceed 55 pounds. We have 2 small dogs (shitzus) and they weigh 15 pounds each. So we have 2 dogs weighing a total of 30 pounds. So we were happy and since our pets are within the guidelines and rules, we purchased the condo. About 7 months later some jerk complains that we have 2 dogs to the management.. The management says we may only have 1 dog not to weigh more than 55 pounds. I showed him what the realtor gave us and showed him whete it says "pets" plural, more than 1). He refused to even look at it. He said i have to get rid of 1 of the dogs. My daughter cried and both my wife and i are mad cause this is false representation and we would have NEVER EVER bought the damn condo if we had to get rid of our pets. I told my daughter i will fight this tooth and nail and there is no way were getting rid of one of our dogs. These are shitzus and not pitbulls and i even asked the management to see a copy of the rules that say only 1 dog was allowed. He had no copy on hand and even on my contract, which i showed him and he refuses to read says PETS ( plural) are not to have a COMBINED weight to exceed 55 pounds. If you can only have 1 animal, then how can you have a COMBINED weight limit??So, on both the contract and the rulebook both say petS. We beleive to be correct and wondering if possibly getting a lawyer to look over all paperwork would be best to fight this or keep the dogs and let the management take us to court and we could show the judge exactly how the contract and rulebook reads. Any advice????

Open Question: Is living life this way okay?

Growing up the biggest lesson I learned was to be thankful for what you have and that having money and material possessions mean nothing in life if they dont serve a practical purpose (ie: expensive brand name clothes, make up, overspending etc) I always tried to strain away from that mentality until I turned 22, and started truly understanding what is important in life. I'm buying a small condo that costs less than my current rent intentionally to save for a small cottage, in a location that's very inexpensive. I live on my own but have the sweetest man in my life I could ask for (we met when I was 14) he's the best. I started my own business, and have a part time job too, I'm not about money, things, or poessions, and am about education, love, pets, and creativity. I don't spend a lot on clothes, but will on occasion. I'm very love, sex, romance, quality time oriented and hate cold distant people. I'm wondering if this is an okay way to be? I feel others look down upon me because I don't talk about shopping, Or purchases, or brands very much (mostly my own family truthfully ) I feel stereotyped and judged by others, which is unfortunate. Is there something I can do to feel Less inadequate? I'm proud of what and who I am, But I don't boast about it.

Open Question: How much rent should we charge my roommate for sleeping in the living room?

My boyfriend and I have two daughters and a son. We just moved in a condo on feb. My boyfriend brought the two strange people to my home to get to know each other and we felt bad for them since they were homeless and been sleeping in the van for while. We decided to let them stay at my place for two weeks till they find a new place. Somehow my boyfriend asked them  if they want to stay and start paying rent for staying in the living room. In the past,  I have had two roommates that lived with me before and they paid more rent like 350-400 for a room. Now,  I charged the new roommate for sleeping in the  Living room for 175 every month. How much rent I should charge them for sleeping in the living room?  I didn't charge them w utilities and one of them depend on us to feed him without him paying his own food. He doesn't know how to be wise with his money for food, gas and other. Im tired and frustrated with him for depending on my boyfriend to cook and feed him even he's broke. We pay 1,300 for the rent, 100 for sdge, 106 for cox cable, 300 for food, and we also just got new tv for 233 every month since three of our TVS were stolen from the storage.  Please help me how much rent includUtilitieses and food or without food that I should charge them ? They receive 900+ from their social security benefits.  Thanks! Thanks for those advices. We will reconsider the rent and others plus my bf is considering kicking the male roommate since he has no sense and respect around my home when we had told him to get his own food and other things. We are 27 years old they are 20 years older than us. Thanks again! We kinda know them from our friend's friend. We just call them stranger because we barely know them from a small world. They don't do drugs since my bf is an interpreter for their dr Appointments and others. All I know that he smokes cigarette. We are non smoker and he knew about it. He mind his own business except some of the issues that I mentioned on my question above.
